Windows 8 Store passes 35,000 total apps

Microsoft’s better late than never Windows 8 app store continues to grow, having added 14,557 apps in the past 35 days alone, according to tracking website MetroStore Scanner. With that number, the Windows 8 app ecosystem has a total of 35,167 apps. 22,000 of those are available in the US market.
This may be far behind Apple and Google, but the new figures have to be encouraging for Microsoft as the software giant struggles to stay relevant and compete. The Windows 8 store debuted with 10,000 apps on October 30, growing to 13,000 within a week. Windows 8 is currently adding about 415 apps a day, which puts the OS on track to hit the 50,000 app mark on February 1.
That’s not bad growth for a late comer.

HTC Windows Phone 8S Not Coming To The US

When HTC announced its new Windows Phone 8 smartphones, the HTC Windows Phone 8X and the HTC Windows Phone 8S, we thought that both handset would be available in the US as well as Europe.
Now it would appear that HTC does not plan to launch the cheaper HTC Windows Phone 8S in the US, you can see an official statement from HTC below.
“The Windows Phone 8X by HTC is our signature Windows Phone available at AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless in the U.S. With our focus on the Windows Phone 8X by HTC, the Windows Phone 8S is not currently planned for distribution in the U.S. market.”
We would have thought that it would have been a good move for HTC to also launch the HTC 8S in the US as well as the HTC 8X, as it would give people who wanted a cheaper option another choice of a Windows phone 8 handset.
If HTC is unable to offer the device with the various carriers on contract, they could at least offer the HTC Windows Phone 8S as a SIM free option in the US.

Firefox browser add-on lets us try Firefox OS in an all-Mozilla universe

We’ve had the chance to experiment with early versions of Firefox OS for awhile — just not in Firefox the browser, where you’d nearly expect it to have shown first. At least one person appreciates that seemingly natural fit. A new Firefox OS simulator add-on, r2d2b2g, lets us try Mozilla’s upcoming mobile platform from within the company’s own browser for everything that doesn’t depend on native hardware, including the browser and Firefox Marketplace. The goal is ostensibly to let developers test truly optimized web apps, although the simulator is also a good excuse for the curious to try Firefox OS without the hassle of a dedicated client or a real smartphone. If you can get by the early state of the simulator and the Xzibit jokes that come with putting Firefox on your Firefox, the extension is already providing a glimpse of a web-focused mobile future to Linux, Mac and Windows users at the source below.

Following on from the recent launch of Windows 8 on October 26th 2012, Microsoft has now released a new SkyDrive application for smartphones running its Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system.
Although it has been possible to access files stored in the SkyDrive cloud storage facility via other Microsoft applications, the new SkyDrive WP 8 app allows you to now access everything from one place.
The latest SkyDrive 3.0 for Windows Phone 8 now enables you to search your SkyDrive files and folders, and brings newly updated icons and visuals into play together with the new Windows Phone 8 support. Microsoft explains:
“SkyDrive is the place to store your files so you can access them from virtually any device. Windows Phone has built-in access to SkyDrive right from the Office and Pictures hubs. It can also automatically upload pictures that you take to SkyDrive for easy access. Now the SkyDrive app for Windows Phone makes it even easier to manage and share files—all in one place.”

Windows RT Uses Half Of Surface Tablet’s 32GB Disk Space

Microsoft recently launched their new Surface Tablet, the device comes with Windows RT and features 32GB of built in disk space, and Microsoft advertises the device as coming with 32GB of storage.
It would appear that you will only be able to use around half of the actual 32GB of storage to stores your files, as Windows RT apparently uses around half of the 32GB available storage, have a look at what you get below, direct from Microsoft’s website.
Here’s how much hard disk space you have available out of the box:
The 32 GB version has approximately 16 GB free hard disk space.
The 64 GB version has approximately 46 GB free hard disk space.
This is something all manufacturers do with their devices, Android devices and iOS devices advertise a certain amount of disk space, but you can’t use it all as some of it is used by the OS, although I don’t think many other tablets use half of their advertised disk space for the OS.
