Canon takes a cue from Pentax, starts selling the T3 in assorted colors

Well, looky here, Canon just let its hair down. The company was clearly in an experimental mood, and got the harebrained idea that consumers just might snap up red and brown DSLRs the way they do its candy-colored point-and-shoots. The outfit’s now selling its beginner-friendly EOS Rebel T3 in red, brown, and metallic gray — all in addition to your garden-variety black, of course. Sure, that’s tame by Pentax’s wacky standards, but for Canon it’s pretty… outlandish. Since the camera went on sale this spring, its price has dropped from $599 to a promotional $549 for the kit, which includes an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom II lens. As for the body, if you’ll recall, it has a 12.2 megapixel sensor that records 720p video (a rarity for an entry-level model), a nine-point autofocus system, ISO 100 to 6,400, and a 63-zone dual-metering system. Acer announces redesigned Aspire TimelineX Series laptops, prices start at $599

If Acer’s current Aspire TimelineX notebooks look a little too dull for your tastes, have a peek at that industrial-looking number in the picture above. The company just redesigned its line of skinny laptops, and refreshed them with Sandy Bridge processors while it was at it. The 13.1-inch 3830T, 14-inch 4830T, and 15.6-inch 5830T all have that two-tone aluminum design (also available in black), along with USB 3.0, a choice of Core i3 and Core i5 CPUs, and Acer’s clear.fi software for sharing media among DLNA devices. The 14- and 15.6-inch versions have onboard optical drives and number pads, and, on select models, you can choose a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT520M or GT540M card. However, the screen resolution is going to be 1366 x 768 regardless of which you pick. The 3830T, 4830T, and 5830T are available now, starting at $799, $699, and $599, respectively, and you can find specs for a handful of models after the break.

HP Pavilion dm4x with Sandy Bridge goes on sale, starts at $730

Those Sandy Bridge refreshes just keep on coming. Today, it’s HP’s turn, whose 14-inch Pavilion dm4 (which we reviewed last year) now comes standard with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M CPU. Curiously, it’s now the dm4x — a suffix you don’t usually see on HP notebooks. For that $730 starting price, you’ll also get Radeon HD 6470M graphics with 1GB of memory, 6GB of RAM, a 640GB 5,400RPM hard drive, and a six-cell battery. If money’s no object, you can trick yours out with a 2.7GHz Core i7-2620M processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB 7,200RPM HDD. Oh, and for $25 you can opt for a “dark umber” color instead of “steel grey” (pictured). Not too shabby, but we just hope HP also fixed that wonky touchpad.

HP's 3105m is the Pavilion dm1z, rebadged for the business set

We already knew HP had a home run on its hands with the Pavilion dm1z, the first notebook to hit the market with AMD’s long-awaited Fusion platform. Well, it looks like consumers agreed, and the company’s chomping at the bit to duplicate that winning formula for the business crowd. HP’s quietly taken the veil off the 3105m, another 11.6-inch laptop packing AMD’s dual-core 1.6GHz E-350 Zacate CPU and Radeon HD 6310 graphics. The difference is, this little guy runs Windows 7 Professional and offers support for Computrace LoJack for laptops. Otherwise, the $449 starting price is identical, as are the specs, including a standard 320GB 7,200RPM hard drive, 2GB of RAM, and a six-cell battery that promises to last up to nine and a half hours on a charge.
