Mozila has today announced that it has now renamed it Boot2Gecko mobile HTML5 based mobile operating system to Firefox OS, showing the new operating system is moving closer to launch.
Mozila has also announced partnerships with six carriers who are going to manufacture handsets ready to start running the new Firefox OS operating system, once it is officially launched.
These include Sprint, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart and Telenor, as well as partnerships with two device manufacturers TCL Communication Technology and TZE.
“The Firefox OS for mobile devices is built on Mozilla’s “Boot to Gecko project” which unlocks many of the current limitations of web development on mobile, allowing HTML5 applications to access the underlying capabilities of a phone, previously only available to native applications. Telefonica’s Digital unit joined forces with Mozilla earlier this year to take this work and showcase a new phone architecture where every phone feature (calling, messaging, games, etc.) is an HTML5 application.”
Mozilla hopes to have the new handsets in stores buy the end of this year, or early into 2013. Unfortunately no information on pricing or worldwide availability has been released as yet, but as soon as information comes to light we will keep you updated as always.
Google has always been known as a company that adds Easter Egg surprises to its devices and their new Nexus Q streaming media seems to have one as well.In the form of a Magic 8 Ball mode, which has been discovered by Google I/O attendee Adrian Perez.
The discovered Magic 8 Ball mode is activated by using the Android Nexus Q app, and enables voice recognition on the Nexus Q media streaming device.
The mode is activated by tapping repeatedly on the Nexus Q’s image in the dedicated Android app. Once triggered the application will then respond with a text message stating “Have a dilemma? Ask the Q.”
Once the text message is displayed you can then ask the Google Nexus Q questions which are then answered in the style of a Magic 8 Ball novelty toy. As a recap the new Google Nexus Q media streaming player is powered by a dual core OMAP 4460 Cortex A9 processor supported by 1GB of RAM, running Google’s latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system.

This is a port of Jellybean, based off of the roms for the two nexus devices that were released yesterday. I’m working to add in all of the key features at the moment, and it’s going pretty well, so you can probably expect to see some kind of Alpha release fairly soon.

Last week Google launched their first Android tablet, the Google Nexus 7 which was made in conjunction with Asus and is the first device to come with the new version of Google’s mobile OS, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Now according to a recent report by Digitimes, Google is also working on another new Android tablet, which will apparently feature a 10 inch display and will be called the Google Nexus 10.
Of course this is just a rumor at the moment, but we suspect that Google probably do have another Nexus Tablet in the works, and a 10 inch version would seem like the next logical step for Google.

We have seen a couple of videos before of Apple’s Siri against various other voice activated virtual assistants, and now we have a video of Siri tested against Google Search on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The video below shows Google Search running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and Apple’s Siri on the iPhone 4S, both devices are asked the same question at the same time.
As you can see from the video, it looks like the default Google Search seems to be able to answer the questions quicker than Apple’s Siri, it will be interesting to see this test again when Siri gets updated with iOS 6 to see if it can do a better job then.
The writing’s been on the wall for some time now, with this having been considered a done-deal back in March, but now the two parties involved are going public. Beats Electronics, the house that Dre built, is acquiring the MOG music streaming service, adding a little content to its brightly-colored can offerings. No word on cost, but MOG is said to have raised $33 million in funding to date, so that might give you a ballpark figure. It’s also unclear how or whether Beats-investor HTC might be involved in this new relationship, but if recent happenings are any indication, don’t go expecting too much on that front.
