Extra footage of record-setting Yates electric plane flight shows power loss, dramatic deadstick landing (video)

We’ve chronicled Flight of the Century founder and CEO Chip Yates’ record-breaking 202.6MPH flight in his Long-ESA EV craft before. What we didn’t quite touch on, however, is the power loss Yates’ aircraft suffered after earning that electric plane speed record. Now Yates has released new video of the flight, which includes the moment his aircraft breaks the record, the ensuing power loss and his dramatic deadstick landing. That smile you see in the photo up there is the smile of a man who just made history and is also happy to be alive. Hey, we’re glad he’s safe, too. You can witness the close call yourself by checking out the video after the break.
Asus VG278H, the first 144 Hz Monitor

Sure, this monitor looks pretty ordinary, but it not just your average monitor. Asus has just revealed the Asus VG278H. It’s actually the first monitor to break past the 120 Hz mark. Not that they haven’t been trying for years. This determines the refresh rate of the screen. The higher the resolution, the more solid and flicker-free the image. Naturally, gamers will be thrilled with this monitor.
With the unprecedented 144 Hz refresh rate, Asus claims, it will deliver “ultra-smooth 2D visuals” for games. The response time has also been cut to 2ms to “eliminate tracing and ensure crisp and clear video playback.”
This monitor also supports Nvidia 3D Vision 2 glasses technology, which is said to provide “twice sharper 3D images than conventional 3D technology.” The standard is supported in around 500 games. So, yeah this is a sweet gaming monitor. Nothing on pricing or a release date yet though.

When Microsoft launches Window 8 later this year, we will also see a number of new Window RT tablets, which are being developed by a number of manufacturers.

Apple unveils Safari 6: goes well with your new Mountain Lion (update: Windows version absent)

Apple’s web browser has joined its latest OS, and joins the dots on a raft of new features that we’ve been promised for a while. These include iCloud tabs and a new tab view — both Mountain Lion only — alongside a new smart search and unified search (with support for Chinese search giant Baidu) and address bar. If your older OS is missing out on those iCloud tabs, there’s some other good news, Reading Lists will now work without being online — which all sounds very in-flight friendly. There’s also a Do Not Track option to cover your internet tracks, but for all the minute detail on some new developer additions, we’d advise hitting the source below.
Update 1: We’re not spotting a Windows release yet — and nor can we see whether it will work on Snow Leopard. Let us know in the comments if you manage to grab the latest iteration. For anyone on Lion, the update will be available from the Mac App Store.
Update 2: The latest version may not arrive on Windows — with all references to the old version now gone from Apple’s site. As 9to5Mac notes, nightly WebKit builds are still out there if you have a sudden pang for Safari. We’ve reached out to Apple to confirm.

We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we’ve got in the pipeline.”
We just checked the UK Mac App Store and OS X Mountain Lion is not available as yet, it should be available some time later today, we will let you guys know when it becomes available.
