Lenovo Recalls 188,000 ThinkCentre M90z & M70z All-In-One Desktops Due To Fire Risk

ThinkCentre M70z

Lenovo has expanded the recall of its ThinkCentre all-in-one desktops, and has issued an announcement recommending that users should immediately stop using the affected desktop PCs.

Lenovo requests that users unplug the power cord on ThinkCentre M90z and M70z PCs sold between May 2010 and March 2012, which amounts to around 188,000 systems.

The recall being carried out by Lenovo is due to a faulty power supply that has a chance of overheating and poses a possible fire hazard.

“In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lenovo is voluntarily recalling 188,000 ThinkCentre M70z and ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one (AIO) desktop PCs sold worldwide between May 2010 and March 2012 (Previously, the announced recall included 160,000 systems built between May 2010 and December 2011).

Lenovo has determined that due to a failure of the power supply in the affected all-in-one PCs, the system can overheat and pose a fire hazard. Lenovo has received two customer reports of fire that resulted in damage to the PC.”

For more information on the recall and to see if your system is within the recall criteria, jump over to the Lenovo website for more details.

Limited Edition PS3 Call of Duty: MW3 320GB System Arriving May 25th

PS3 MW3

On the Playstation Blog Sony has announced the arrival of a new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 PS3 bundle, that will be arriving in stores on May 25th. The limited edition PS3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 bundle includes a 320GB PlayStation 3 System and a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for $299.

But unfortunately nothing else, which is a little disappointing, even the console has remained the same as a standard off the shelf 320GB PS3. Considering PlayStation has partnered with Activision, the companies could surely come up with something a little more tempting than bundling just the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 game with a 320GB PS3.

Twitter tries to debunk hacker claims

Hackers posted five pages worth of usernames and passwords for claimed Twitter accounts to Pastebin this week. The hackers claim to be affiliated with Anonymous and to have stolen the username and password combinations from Twitter servers. Twitter is trying to debunk those claims.

The debunking won’t make most of us feel better though, twitter claims that most of the hacked accounts were deactivated spammer accounts. The fact that hackers were able to access Twitter servers and steal usernames and passwords at all should be enough to make twitter users nervous no matter the status of the accounts.

Hackers claimed that some celebrity accounts were among those compromised. However the list of user accounts and passwords contains more than 20,000 duplicate items according to twitter making it tech less effective than it seems.

Samsung shows off production 55-inch OLED HDTVs at the 2012 World’s Fair

Image

We got a first hand look at Samsung’s stunning 55-inch OLED HDTV prototypes earlier this year during CES, but now it’s surprising the world by showing off the first mass produced ES9500 models at the 2012 World’s Fair (which is apparently still a thing?) in Korea. Beyond the Smart Interaction voice and gesture control, Smart Content and Smart Evolution upgradeable dual-core CPU features found in its other high-end HDTVs, Samsung has also built in Smart Dual View technology. This lets users watch two different programs (2D) on one screen at the same time using the set’s 3D glasses. Since each pixel is individually lit, Samsung says its OLED tech has 20 percent better color reproduction than existing LED-backlit LCD HDTVs. There’s still no word on exactly when these will ship and for how much, however with competition on the way from LG, these fresh-off-the-factory-line flat panels are a sign we won’t be waiting long. Other than new display tech, Samsung also took the opportunity to officially announce bigger LCD models on the way in sizes from 60- to 75-inches. Check the galleries below for a few pictures straight from the expo, as well as our shots of the CES display.

Toshiba’s 55XS5 brings quad HD without the glasses-free 3D tech to Japan in June

Toshiba's 55XS5 brings quad HD without the glasses-free 3D tech to Japan in June

While we’re still waiting for Toshiba to deliver its top of the line 55X3 HDTV with 4K resolution and glasses-free 3D technology here in the US, it just announced a step-down model in Japan. The Regza 55XS5 keeps the 3840 x 2160 LCD panel, but switches to edge LED lighting instead of local dimming and drops 3D altogether, autostereoscopic or otherwise. There’s a CEVO Duo image processing engine inside the slimmed-down frame upconverting your standard HDTV res inputs to QFHD, as well as support for apps and USB hard drive for recording broadcasts. This model should ship in June on the other side of the Pacific for an “open price” expected to be around 750,000 yen ($9,410 US), slightly lower than the X3′s 900,00 yen launch price last December.

Facebook starts App Center beta, readies itself for paid web apps

Image

Facebook is no stranger to letting members use real money in web apps, but only for in-app purchases. Its new App Center on the web and in mobile versions will let you buy web apps that have an up-front cost to use rather than shoehorning you into a freemium or subscription model. The portal will even have its own shopping portal, although it’ll mostly be based around — surprise — recommendations coming from your social network profile. The addition should, in theory, lead to premium games and other apps that wouldn’t fit into the Facebook Credit mould. Facebook is taking developer beta sign-ups now, although the apps themselves will have to wait.
